River Otter with Pup (Crawford County)

July 5, 2018

Mama river otter with her only pup on a spring run in Crawford County.

After 12 attempts at staking out an active otter latrine along a spring run in Crawford County, I encountered a mama river otter and a single pup. I expected them to show up on the gravel bar where the latrine is located, but instead they jumped up on an old sycamore deadfall that has been there for as long as I can remember. I don’t know how many times I’ve stared at that log over the years, waiting, no, yearning, for a critter to use it as a perch or platform. Well, this morning my luck changed!

Notice the front left foot injury to the mama otter. It has not slowed her down a bit as she kept close tabs on her rambunctious pup.

Below is another image of the pup which is getting pretty big at this point in the summer. I have to wonder what happened to its sibling or siblings. I’ve never seen a mama otter with only one youngster.

An otter pup plays on a long-fallen sycamore trunk.

After some grooming and cuddle time between mama and baby, they dropped off the log and started swimming right toward my position at water’s edge. I was well camouflaged so I was a little nervous that I might surprise them at the last second.

Mama and the pup coming right at me!

Ultimately, the mama pulled up but the pup kept coming and tried to join me in my turkey chair. As you can see in the next image, mama wasn’t happy. Finally, I wiggled my foot to shoo it away as mama gave me the stink-eye. I was just wearing neoprene wading shoes so I didn’t want the adult to come over bite off one of my toes.

Mama otter watches me as her pup tried to interact with my feet!

After so many long mornings of staring into space, daydreaming from the otter hide, I sure was happy to finally have some success. I hope to see the mama otter and her tireless pup again in the near future.
