Rim-lit Coyote (Nature Frames Short)

April 18, 2018

A coyote, rim-lit by the morning sun.

I set up for turkeys down the hill from our house a little before sunrise but didn’t hear a gobble for two hours. I likely would have seen a few late-morning gobblers if I would have stayed put but the light was getting too bright for good turkey images, especially gobblers with their dramatic range of coloration from bright white to deep bronze. “Oh well,” I thought, “maybe tomorrow,” and I started back up the hill to the house. After I had broken down my gear and stowed everything in its place, I scanned the hillside, over which I had just trudged, and saw this coyote hunting voles. It was walking with a bit of a limp on its right hind leg but appeared fit enough for hunting as it jumped in the air and made a pounce on its quarry. I scrambled as fast as I could to put my camera and lens back together, switched the IS (internal stabilization) to the “on” position, and made this image, tripod free and shooting right into the sun (700 mm; 1/640; f/5.6; +1/3; ISO 400). The rim-lit coyote was a good distance away but the 50% crop turned out fine. As I always say, “You never know what a morning might bring.”

Thanks for looking,

DB

America is beautiful. I vote to keep it that way.

  1. It was very nice meeting you yesterday. Your photographs of the coyote are infinitely better than the blob pic of one I took at the rock mound with my phone just before running in to you Monday at Duckett Creek. As I came back up the hill, looking for an excuse to stop for a moment, I took a break and watched as the birds carried on with their business. I am planning to head back today with my binoculars to catch site of the flocks of warblers passing through. Your site is wonderful!! Thank you for chatting with me.

  2. We just got back from Panama, had a wonderful time. Now get to read your great stories and view the super images.  Keep up the great work. We all truly enjoy it all. Bruce
