Buddy the Barred Owl

January 5, 2015

Our resident barred owl scans the prairie from one of its favorite mid-day perches.

Just a brief update on the barred owl that adopted us in mid-December. We still see it every day, often in the middle of the day (featured image), occasionally in the morning, and always in late-afternoon. Buddy, as we sometimes refer to him, has even visited our heated bird bath which sits on our deck rail right outside our living room. If you follow the Facebook version of Nature Frames, you might have seen a grainy iPhone image of that encounter.

Our barred owl isn’t a bit shy and we have found it is quite approachable, especially from our Kubota side-by-side, from which I captured the images in this post. I take the pictures while Joyce drives. She knows just when to stop and kill the engine. The image below was taken this afternoon right after lunch.

Buddy opens his (her?) eyes for just a moment during its mid-day siesta along our prairie.

Most of the time, we stay clear of the lonely critter and enjoy watching it from our living room, as it should be, but often it flies over and lands in a tree at the edge of the yard while we are feeding the chickens or doing other chores. We haven’t seen any sign of a mate, but we are hoping for the best.

A wider shot of our favorite owl.

I would like to get a capture of Buddy with a vole in its talons, but I haven’t had any luck so far. I have a pop-up blind set up in the field about 30 meters from one of its favorite hunting spots. It doesn’t seem to mind the blind as it often drops into the field to pick up a vole right next to it, unfortunately while I’m watching from the living room. I’m waiting for it to try the top of the blind as a new hunting perch.

That’s all for now. I’ll keep you updated on the status of ole Buddy the Barred Owl.

Thanks for looking,

  1. Hi Danny, That is so neat, that your Barred Owl { Buddy }, keeps coming around. That reminds me of the three, that hatched in my backyard, in the Spring of 2011. Do You talk to Buddy, in a soft voice? Give it a try, if you haven’t already. Keep up the good work. You are the BEST.

    Good Luck

    • I didn’t even think about that but I’ll have to give it a try. We sure had fun with your yard barreds!

  2. Since he is a Bard Owl, you have to call him Walt Whitman or some name like that. Thanks for the lovely image! I’ve been seeing some owls, too, here in Bangalore,
