I found a trace of gold at Blue Springs Creek this morning!

A golden-winged warbler in joyous song along Blue Springs Creek in Crawford County.

Yes, I struck gold on Blue Springs Creek this morning. I knew it was going to be a great morning because the forecast was “partly cloudy to cloudy.” I relish partly cloudy days because I’m not under so much pressure to capture images before the sun gets too bright/harsh, which is typically by 9:00 AM or a little earlier, in my opinion. This morning, I was able to sit and watch a mink den for almost two hours before I gave up and continued down the middle of the stream in my waders. By the time I found this gorgeous goldenwing, the filtered light was still as soft as ever.

I’m always excited to run across a golden-winged warbler on its migration farther north and east to breeding grounds. The Cornell website reports that golden wings have suffered severe population declines in the last half-century. This little fella didn’t seem to notice me at all as I stood in the middle of the creek with my tripod and camera. It provided a variety of poses before disappearing into the riparian brush.

This head turn revealed the tiny wisp of black “eyeliner” at the back of the bird’s eye, as if it needed any accents to make it more striking.

Maybe the little goldenwing noticed me after all, at least it looks that way from this image.

In this final image, the bird is looking away but I loved the color and texture in this one the most. When my friend Mike looked at the images, he said that the goldenwing reminded him of a chickadee with extra color.

I’m glad I got the chance to share some of the gold from my discovery this morning. I hope it helps to kick off your weekend with a smile on your face. I know it did mine!

Thanks for looking,
