Winter is Coming — Northern Harrier

January 5, 2016

A northern harrier surveys the cold, blue landscape of winter as it takes a break from flying transects over the prairie at August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area. It’s unusual to see a northern harrier in the perched position. Most sightings find this restless raptor on the wing.

It didn’t take long for the harrier to return to its endless search for food in the tall grass.

Thanks for looking,

DB

  1. Here we have the Eurasian Marsh Harrier, and the behaviour…floating over the landscape, looking for food..seems to be exactly the same. We too do not often see this bird perched very often. Thank you for an image that brings out the cold blues of the season!

  2. I like the mood in the photos.
