Yellow-crowned Night-heron (First View of the World)

July 11, 2015

One day I was sitting on a rock in St. Louis’ Forest Park, watching for anything that moved, when this fledgling yellow-crowned night-heron dropped out of the sky and lighted right in front of me in the nearby creek. It was totally confused and so, so sweet to watch and photograph as it wandered around searching for mama or perhaps something to eat. Right when I began feeling sorry for it, an adult dropped in only a few feet from the little one. I assumed it was the mama but she seemed quite aloof around the scruffy little baby. I watched them for awhile and a few minutes later they both took off for a new location. It gave me a warm feeling to be at the right place at the right time, camera in hand, to get such an intimate shot of the young heron, perhaps on its first day away from the nest.

Thanks for looking,

DB
